Where’d you get those peepers? The Peepers have been here a few days now. We have about 25 Cornish cross (meat) chickens, about 10 laying chicks (Blacks, Reds, and Leghorns), and 8 Broad Breasted White turkey poults. They seem settled in and are doing well now. I did lose a couple at the beginning. I am thinking they got smothered even though I was taking great care about the right heat and checking them often. It happens. Chicks are fragile!
The turkey poults are doing very well. No losses there. They are funny little creatures! They are naturally friendly and curious- not nearly as skittish as the chicks. Hopefully, this doesn’t make it more difficult come fall when they are going to head to the their final destination- the freezer.
Today was a lovely warm day, so we took the chicks out for about a half hour to enjoy a taste of the great outdoors. Eden helped me catch them all and put them in a box. She wasn’t too keen on grabbing them, but managed to scare them all over by me so I could catch them. She also threw dirt on them once we got them outside. I think she thought they would enjoy that? Who knows the mind of an almost three year old?
Six of the chicks are Richie’s future laying stock. He plans on selling a couple dozen eggs a week. He requested I take a picture of him with his Leghorns.
