Plantain

I think I found it- the perfect t-shirt for me- the lovely PLANTAIN! And it is FREE! This gem by Deer and Doe showed up on my facebook wall and I couldn’t resist a try at making one. My other attempts at making clothes for myself have ended up making me feel like throwing them at a wall, but this t-shirt makes me want to make a pile of them!

I checked out the measuring chart and picked out a size 43. (the biggest size, yikes!)  To make it “my own” I added a slight hi-lo hem by adding 2 inches to the bottom back and tapered it to the front. It turned out! Woohoo!

I also added cuffs to the sleeves and raised the neckline by almost 2″. With small children it is nice to be able to bend over without flashing everyone in the room! I did a FBA (full bust allowance) of 2.5″ so I could have some ease in the bust area. I think the pattern has negative ease over the bust, but that doesn’t work well for a nursing mama! This was my first real try at a slash and spread FBA. I almost fell over in shock that I got it right the first time!

Things I liked about this pattern:

  • It is free!
  • It is well made.
  • It fits!
  • It has plenty of ease over the belly to cover my poochy tummy.
  • It has options for short, 3/4, and long sleeves.
  • It has plenty of length. ( to cover my poochy tummy)
  • The directions are simple and to the point.
  • I think the patch sleeve option is so cool. I would like to make one with patches soon!

Cons:

  • The bust line is quite low.
  • The directions are very basic. You need to know at least SOMETHING about sewing to make this. You should know how to hem a garment and read up on sewing with knits if you have never done this.
  • The bust has negative ease.

This has to be my favorite thing I have made for myself yet! Plantain is definitely going in my “keeper” pile.
